Why Burning Incense is Becoming a Daily Ritual (And How to Choose the Right One)

In a world that's always asking us to do more, go faster and stay connected, there's something beautifully grounding about lighting a stick of incense.

Unlike candles that often become background ambience, burning incense is intentional. It asks you to pause, even if only for twenty minutes. It signals the start of slow mornings, evening wind-downs, meditation, reading, journaling or simply enjoying a quiet home.

At Sco & Co., we've chosen to stock Gentle Habits' This Is Incense because it aligns perfectly with everything we value—beautiful craftsmanship, thoughtful rituals and products designed to be used every day rather than saved for "special occasions". We also pair them with locally handmade The Muddy Kip Incense Dishes, crafted right here in Tasmania, creating a ritual that's as beautiful as it is functional.

The Benefits of Burning Incense

People have been burning incense for thousands of years across many cultures—not simply because it smells beautiful, but because scent has a remarkable ability to influence how we feel.

Creating a small daily ritual with incense can help:

  • Create a calming atmosphere after a busy day

  • Mark the beginning of meditation, yoga or journaling

  • Encourage mindfulness and intentional living

  • Help separate work from home when working remotely

  • Make your home feel warm, welcoming and lived in

  • Encourage moments of stillness without needing a complicated wellness routine

The ritual itself often becomes just as important as the fragrance.

Lighting a stick, watching the first curl of smoke and allowing the scent to slowly fill your home is a simple reminder to slow down.

Discover Gentle Habits "This Is Incense"

Every fragrance in the Gentle Habits collection has been inspired by a place, feeling or experience rather than simply a list of perfume notes. Each incense stick is hand dipped in Victoria using Australian blended essential oils and phthalate-free fragrance blends. Every box contains 60 sticks with approximately 30 hours of burn time, designed to be long lasting without becoming overpowering.

This Is Incense — Tasmania

Our best-selling fragrance.

Deep, smoky and comforting with notes of leather, frankincense, cedarwood, black pepper and myrrh, Tasmania captures rugged coastlines, cool evenings and the feeling of standing beside the ocean after a storm. It's rich, grounding and perfect for cooler months.

This Is Incense — Margaret River

Fresh, woody and uplifting.

Featuring sandalwood, fragonia, cedarwood and citrus notes, Margaret River evokes forests, vineyards and sea air. If you enjoy clean, natural fragrances that aren't overly floral, this is a beautiful everyday choice.

This Is Incense — Connect

Designed to encourage presence and meaningful moments, Connect makes a wonderful companion for slow mornings, conversations over coffee or simply switching off from screens.

This Is Incense — Immersion

A fragrance created to help you completely immerse yourself in the present moment. Ideal for meditation, creative work or quiet evenings at home.

This Is Incense x Peppa Hart — Electric Dreams

Playful, artistic and full of personality, this collaboration pairs Gentle Habits' much-loved incense with Peppa Hart's colourful artwork, making it just as giftable as it is enjoyable to burn.

Complete the Ritual with a Handmade Muddy Kip Incense Dish

Beautiful incense deserves an equally beautiful place to rest.

Our The Muddy Kip Incense Dishes are handcrafted in Tasmania using the same thoughtful approach found across Blake's ceramic collection. Available in various designs and glazes, each dish is individually made, meaning no two are exactly alike.

Rather than mass-produced homewares, these are pieces you'll enjoy leaving on display even when not in use.

The soft organic forms, earthy textures and subtle variations are part of what make handmade ceramics so special. Every fingerprint, curve and glaze variation reflects the maker behind the piece.

The dishes are perfectly sized to catch ash while remaining minimal enough to style on:

  • Coffee tables

  • Bedside tables

  • Bathroom vanities

  • Shelves

  • Entry consoles

  • Reading nooks

Even without incense burning, they become a small piece of functional art within your home.

Supporting local makers has always been at the heart of Sco & Co., and The Muddy Kip continues to create some of our most loved handmade ceramic pieces.

How to Burn Incense Safely

If you're new to incense, getting started couldn't be easier.

Simply:

  1. Place the incense stick into your incense holder.

  2. Light the tip until a small flame appears.

  3. Allow it to burn for around five seconds.

  4. Gently blow out the flame so the stick continues to smoulder.

  5. Enjoy approximately twenty minutes of beautiful fragrance.

Always burn incense in a well-ventilated area and never leave it unattended.

More Than Home Fragrance

For us, incense isn't simply about making your home smell nice.

It's about creating moments.

Moments to enjoy your morning coffee before the house wakes up.

Moments to finish the day with a book instead of a phone.

Moments to reconnect with yourself, your family or your home.

Sometimes the smallest rituals become the ones we treasure most.
